ASEAN-Plus Senior Defense Ministers Exchange views on regional and international defense

Phnom Penh: The ASEAN-Plus Defense Ministers' Meeting, hosted by Cambodia, ended with a successful result on Wednesday, May 18.

The Special Adviser to the Minister of Defense and Director-General of Politics and Foreign Affairs, who chaired the ASEAN-Plus Defense Ministers’ Meeting, said that the ASEAN-Plus Defense Ministers' Meeting 2022 was organized under the theme "Solidarity For Harmonious Security."

The meeting exchanged views on national and international defense and security issues to strengthen regional security, peace and stability, and noted a number of common views that ASEAN faces non-traditional security issues such as terrorism, climate change, maritime security and natural disasters. In particular, the Covid-19 pandemic, which has had a devastating effect on human health and the global economy.

However, the meeting still considers the ASEAN-Plus Defense Ministers' Meeting as an important forum for discussions and consultations related to defense and security, as well as setting out practical guidelines for regional cooperation. All countries continue to support the ASEAN Middle East and ASEAN's central role in shaping the region. This is according to the press release of the General Department of Politics and Foreign Affairs of the Ministry of National Defense on Thursday to May 19.

During the meeting, Cambodia released the 2022 Defense White Book, which is one of six priority achievement document of the Ministry of National Defense's for hosting the 2022 Summit.

The ASEAN Senior Defense Minister Delegation paid a courtesy call on DPM Tea Banh, Minister of National Defense, at MND and received some important ideas related to the hosting of the Defense Ministers' Meeting.

During the meeting, there were a total of 41 bilateral meetings between the delegations of the countries attending the ADSOM-Plus meeting (of which 18 were from Cambodia) to discuss recent developments in the region and globally, as well as to facilitate work for the upcoming ADMM and ADMM-Plus meetings.

The content achieved by the ASEAN Defense Minister-Plus is in preparation for the 16th ASEAN Defense Ministers 'Meeting on 21-22 June 2022 and the 9th ASEAN-Plus Defense Ministers' Meeting on November 22-23, 2022.
